    Senior Research Statistician 

    AstraZeneca is looking for a skilled statistician (could be a recent graduate or someone with many years of experience) to work as part of the Quantitative Biology department in Cambridge, UK. You will be joining a dynamic team of statisticians, informaticians, modellers and image analysts, and also be part of a global group with representatives in the UK, Sweden, and the US. In this position you will provide statistical support to our research areas. You will work closely with preclinical projects, providing business critical expertise to enable problem resolution particularly around biological assay development, optimisation, validation and data analysis. You will be expected to proactively seek opportunities to contribute; influencing at all levels from bench scientists to senior business leaders. In addition, engaging effectively with the external environment will be an important component.

    As a Senior Research Statistician your skills and qualifications will ideally include:

    • Strong quantitative background with a PhD in statistics, mathematics, data science, or equivalent
    • Broad experience in statistical data analysis, and knowledge of at least some of the following areas: experimental design, linear/nonlinear models, mixed effect models, data mining, Bayesian methods, and statistical learning
    • Programming proficiency and experience with relevant software tools such as R, Mathematica, SAS, Stan, and Matlab. Familiarity with SAS JMP and/or Spotfire would also be useful
    • Excellent consulting, communication, and presentation skills, especially in communicating statistical concepts to non-statisticians
    • Basic understanding of cell biology and human physiology.

    As a Senior Research Statistician your main responsibilities will involve:

    • Using statistics you’ll work with drug discovery projects and therapeutic areas to identify and deliver solutions for addressing key biological questions
    • Building or internalizing, appropriate algorithms and techniques to answer defined biological questions
    • Implementing and developing solutions with appropriate software
    • Build knowledge of quantitative biology capabilities across R&D
    • Contributing to and leading local and global projects for the Quantitative Biology department
    • Ensuring that results are scientifically robust and documented.
