  • 1.  Insight on JSM abstracts, please

    Posted 01-23-2016 09:43

    Hi Everyone,

I'd like to solicit opinions on submitting an abstract for the 2016 JSM, particularly which section and whether to request a poster versus an oral presentation.

This will be my first JSM so I'm a complete neophyte to this particular meeting.  I have attended countless biomedical and medical/technical communication meetings but each meeting is different in character and organization.  I'm not familiar with how the JSM program is organized nor of the content focus of various sections.

My abstract focuses on consulting with clients whose projects are remote collaborations but who have no experience collaborating remotely and who do not have the software or, in some cases, the hardware to support remote collaboration.  Essentially, my abstract is a case study of how, in addition to their statistical and methodology skills, consulting statisticians must be prepared to use in a respectful and responsible manner various non-statistical "soft" support skills (i.e. communication, patience, technical, etc) to help clients to overcome unexpected obstacles that impede the progress of and threaten the success of their projects.  It also might be a cautionary tale of why it is important for statistical consultants to understand clients' functional capacities.

From veteran JSM attendees, I'd appreciate insight on whether this topic is appropriate for a JSM abstract and any suggestions for appropriate sections for the topic.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Linda

This sounds interesting to me. I'd suggest submitting to the section on stat consulting. It's more broad than biostat.

    Patricia,

Thanks for your feedback on the section.  I was leaning towards that section.

For JSM, would you suggest applying for a poster or an oral presentation?  What is your experience with JSM?  Every meeting is different so I'm trying to get the lay of the land.

    Thanks again.

This is an appropriate topic. I suggest submitting it as an oral presentation to the Section on Statistical Consulting.

I think this would be better as an oral presentation.. Speed is also a possibility - those have 4 minutes oral and then an electronic poster.  Part of the question you need to think about is whether you are more comfortable one-on-one.  A topic like this, though, is more broad than that (IMO).

    Patricia,

Thanks for the additional feedback.  I'm comfortable with either a poster or oral presentation.  The "speed" presentation would be a whole new experience, though.  I haven't run into that type of presentation before.  The description made me think of the Ignobel awards, where "winners" have to describe their research in 60 seconds or less and by using 6 words.
