    -------------------------------------------
    Greetings,

One of this year's initiatives of the ASA Section on Statistical Consulting (CNSL) is to help strengthen existing (bio)statistical consulting centers and collaboration laboratories ("stat labs") and to lay the foundation for other universities and colleges to create new stat labs. We believe that stat labs serve a very important function within the field of statistics by training students to effectively apply statistics to solve real-world problems and by demonstrating the value and impact of statistics to our non-statistician clients and collaborators.

We are gathering information about which stat labs currently exist in North America and what they are currently doing. This information will be useful for benchmarking (seeing how a stat lab compares to its peers) and eventually for determining a set of best practices for growing and sustaining stat labs based on their local conditions.

We have created a preliminary list of stat labs at this website: http://www.lisa.stat.vt.edu/?q=other_centers

Is your university's stat lab on this list? If you know of any additions, edits, or corrections to make to this list, please email them to me <ervance@vt.edu> and James Wrenn <jerwrenn@vt.edu>.

Once this list of stat labs is "finalized," we will permanently host in on the CNSL microsite: http://community.amstat.org/CNSL/Home/

Thank you for your help in this effort by verifying that the information for your stat lab is included in our list.

    Sincerely,
    Eric Vance
    Chair of CNSL

Many thanks to all of you who have suggested additions to our list of stat labs in North America. We have added twelve since last week. The current list is here: http://www.lisa.stat.vt.edu/?q=other_centers

We are looking to make the list more complete by adding additional stat labs that satisfy our five criteria for inclusion:
For the purpose of this study, we define a formal stat lab/center as a group of statisticians that has the following components:
    1. A formal web presence where someone can learn how to request statistical help
    2. An official name of the stat lab
    3. A director (manager, coordinator, etc.) or other point of contact
    4. A (bio)statistical component to its services (for example: a lab focused only on applied math or computer science would not qualify)
    5. An affiliation with a four year college or university in North America, i.e., the stat lab has to be part of a college/university not just a hospital or a government agency

Do you know of a stat lab that should be on this list? If you know of any additions, edits, or corrections to make to this list, please email them to me <ervance@vt.edu> and James Wrenn <jerwrenn@vt.edu>.

As part of an initiative by the ASA Section on Statistical Consulting (CNSL) and LISA (Virginia Tech's Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) to help strengthen existing stat labs and to lay the foundation for new ones, we will be collecting data on six areas for each of the listed stat labs.

Our current (draft) plan is to classify and benchmark stat labs based on the types of services provided, the types of clients, funding, personnel, training, and the stat lab's parent organization (e.g., Dept. of Statistics, University Library, College of Public Health).

We want the final result to be useful for statisticians running stat labs. Do you think we are missing any major categories or benchmarks? Below is a more detailed list of categories/benchmarks but is still just a sketch of the data we wish to collect.

    I. Types of Services:
    1. # and types of services
    2. # of clients per service
    3. # of short courses/workshops

    II. Clients:
    1. Types of clients (Internal/External, Limited to Specific Areas of Research such as Health Sciences only?)
    A. # of clients per type
    i. Internal- University Affiliated
    ii. External-Non-University Affiliated

    2. Do Clients Pay?
    A. Average amount per hour of service.

    III. Funding:
    1. Is your center/lab funded by your department?
    A. How much funding do you receive from your department?

    2. Is your center/lab funded by your college?
    A. How much funding do you receive from your college?

    3. Is your center/lab funded by your university?
    A. How much funding do you receive from your university?

    4. Is your center/lab funded by some other source?
    A. How much funding do you receive from other sources?

    IV. Personnel
    1. Do Faculty members work in your center/lab?
    A. FTE (Full Time Equivalent)
    B. Level of faculty (degrees, background, and experience)

    2. Do students work in your center/lab
    A. Grad Students-# and FTE (Full Time Equivalent)
    B. Undergrads-# and FTE (Full Time Equivalent)
    C. Others-# and FTE (Full Time Equivalent)

    V. Training:
    1. Type of training
    A. Number of students
    B. Required/Voluntary

    VI. Parent Organization

    Eric Vance
