    Dear section members,

Our section is famous for our lively discussions and generous contributions/responses by our members. We are so lucky to have members with various background and wisdoms. In spite of that, some of our members might feel they are too shy to send a message to the entire section or their questions are a little bit personal. To facilitate further communications for situations like those, we are launching a new mentoring program.

Unlike regular mentoring programs in which people are paired up and the mentors need to make a long-term commitment, our new program hopes to create a project-based, short-term mentorship (thanks to the idea from Michiko Wolcott). We are hoping to create a platform such that if you have a particular question that you feel a personal communication would be helpful, you can send in a request through the platform. One of the mentors who have signed up would pick it up and the two of you could work together on that project/question for a short-period of time. Technically, your mentor-mentee relationship ends when the problem is solved and if you have a new question you might have a new mentor, but if mutually agreed, you two can maintain a longer term interaction. We hope that this new program could greatly reduce the time commitment of mentors therefore more people would be willing to serve as a mentor, and the pairing is more targeted and effective.

To make this happen, we would need the generous support from all of you. If you are willing to serve as a potential mentor, please fill out your information here: Consulting Mentors. You will get an email notification when someone sends in a request.

We will send more information as we gather enough potential mentors.

Thanks a lot for your support.

    Best,
    Maggie

    Hi Maggie,

This sounds like a great way to structure a mentoring relationship! Thank you for leading this effort. I'll see about signing up.

    Best,
    Eric Jay / EJ

    Dear members,

Our new mentoring platform has officially launched. Thanks a lot to the effort by our webmaster, Hoang Nguyen. The website is https://community.amstat.org/cnsl/forconsultants/request-mentor. You need to log in to your ASA account to access this site. It is still under development so now many steps are manually done by Hoang. Eventually everything will be automated.

    A couple of notes:

For members requesting a mentor: This platform is for the purpose of finding a short-term/project-based mentor for questions that are specific and might not be of general interests. If you have a general question that you think would benefit other members, you should still ask that in our section's discussion board. After you fill out the form, an email will be sent out to everyone who signed up to be potential mentors. If a mentor would like to offer help, they will email you. After the two of you settle on working together, please send Hoang an email so that he could notify others. Once we automate the process, there will be a check box to indicate this project has been taken instead of many email exchanges.

For potential mentors:  Thank you very much for signing up. After someone sends in a request, you will all receive an email. If you think you could help on this one, you can reply to the person who made the request. Hoang will email everyone once this project has been picked up by a mentor.

If you did not get a chance to sign up but would like to be a potential mentor, please email Hoang (hnguyen@utmb.edu). He will add you to the list.

This is a first try of this effort so there must be a lot of things we did not think of. If you discovered some features were missing or something did not work well, please don't hesitate to let us know. Thank you all for your support!

    Best,
    Maggie

Maggie (and Michiko), this is a wonderful idea. I think it would help mentees as well as mentors save time.

btw, if you need a R&C (review & comment) of the platform as (or after) the platform is created but before you launch it, please reach out to me.

    Dear all

When I tried to sign up by clicking the link, this is the message I got:

    Consulting Mentors
The form Consulting Mentors is no longer accepting responses.
Try contacting the owner of the form if you think that this is a mistake.
