Mentoring relationships can provide valuable support to young statisticians and can offer not only academic and career guidance, but also role models for leadership, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. However, finding a mentor, especially for the young professionals such as new ASA members has its challenges for several reasons; for instance, it can be difficult at times to find someone with i) a similar background, ii) an interest to meet and mentor (or mentee), and iii) the ability to provide useful feedback. Past president Sastry Pantula has written two AMSTAT News columns on monitoring. Yet, dozens of people have come to Committee of Applied Statistician asking if such a program exists. The Committee on Applied Statisticians is developing a mentorship programs within ASA, and the Committee on Minorities in Statistics already have an established monitoring program. The purpose of this session is to give a brief history of monitoring activities within ASA, discuss the current ongoing programs along with their benefits and challenges, and hear first-hand accounts from mentors and mentees on their experiences. This will provide useful information to the audience on ways that they can tap the ASA resources and improve monitoring relationships within the field of statistics. We believe this session is an important topic which will benefit a large number of ASA members. Panelists are the experts with deep insight and extensive involvement in monitoring activities within ASA. They will share their past experiences and thoughts for future to further enrich professional experience through monitoring. This session is proposed by the ASA Committee on Applied Statisticians in collaboration with the ASA Committee on Minorities in statistics.
