better late than never --please send corrections to me and I will update

Notes for October 20, 2010 Phone Conference of the Committee on Applied Statistics

Attending:  Jennifer, Greg,  Gordon,  Barbara,  Marlene,  Amarjot

First discussion concerned the Membership Council and whether we wanted to participate in a joint project.

    Jennifer asked for suggestions on

    how we might work together,

    activities that could be planned,

a joint meeting and what would we want  to accomplish at that meeting.

Second discussion concerned potential proposals that could be submitted to ASA under the strategic initiative mechanism.  (February 2011 deadline)

What ideas could we propose?  What gap could we fill?

What has been done in the past and what has been success in getting funded and successfully carried out with past grants.

Third discussion concerned the Masters Notebook

                    Erin coordinates this effort

Use it as a way to advertise Roundtable topics

Fourth discussion was on the Roundtable format for JSM

Barbara and Marlene have a topic ready to be submitted

                    Questions about the cancel date

Suggestions for advertising our roundtable  -- Stats consulting group,  ENAR meeting in spring

Who is the audience?  How to reach out to it?  Concerns about finding enough people

Erin thinks there will be plenty of interested people - whether they will be at JSM and have the money is another point to consider.

Traffic light tool - thanks to Jennifer, Amarjot for facilitating our accomplishments as a committee

Planning for a small conference on advances in statistical techniques to be held  Feb 2012.  Should it be a Webnar?  Traveling course? Ways to make it less expensive?  Alternatives to expensive hotel sites?

Estimate that about 1000 attendees.  100-200 pay for short courses.

Gordon and Jack are members on Applied statistics group working with this committee.

Need some new appointments to the committee to replace our members who have resigned.
