The ASA is encouraging us to get "more political" -- that is, to weigh in on public policy more. They even hired a policy person -- Steve Pierson -- to help ASA enter the political arena. Turns out the group Scientists and Engineers for America is way ahead of us. They've put together training to help scientists become better at communicating with politicians about "the issues." The first workshop of this year is on July 22nd, in the evening, at AAAS headquarters in Washington DC. In their words, "At this workshop, scientists and engineers will have the opportunity to
hear from an award-winning reporter, a veteran policy maker, and an
expert political strategist about effective communication. Participants
will learn how to get their message into the media, across to a
legislator, or through to the public." See
Messaging Workshopfor more information. Yes, it costs money... but at $25, it is pretty affordable. I might even go!
