Well, I edited a book -- with David Banks and Fritz Scheuren -- on Statistical Methods for Human Rights.  So for fun this morning I thought I'd do a web search and find out what pops up for "Human Rights Statistics."  And... I found a blog on human rights statistics!  See

Spagnoli is looking at high-level statistics and indicators for cross-country comparisons in a lot of cases.  Nice to find other folks out there interested in the intersection of statistics and human rights.

Changing the topic (but only a little bit), indicators of development are important for human rights monitoring as well -- after all, food, shelter, a means of employment, health, and the benefits of scientific progress are all fundamental rights.  A really neat web site that looks at development indicators over time is


I wish I could embed an example graphic here (ASA, can you add that feature?), but you can go check it out yourself.  There is even an option to track development of the different states of the U.S.A.  Sad to see D.C. doing so poorly compared to the other states.
