I use SAS as my primary statistical software package, but at other positions, I've used other commercial software such as Splus, RS/1 and the like. I've also used open-source statistical languages like R.
But there are other statistical applications, many with specialized targeted use. I spend so much of my time using a fixed set of statistical software, that it's fascinating for me to see the depth and variety of what people have built.
In looking up some data question at work, I came across an interesting site:
http://statpages.org/
This site aggregates many sites that offer "live" statistical calculations. I'm not sure how useful it will be to me in my day-to-day work, but I did find it interesting and I think it's worth a visit. The topics include:
- interactive programming environments
- probability distribution functions
- descriptive statistics
- t-tests, regression analysis, ANOVA, etc.
- survival analysis
- Bayesian stuff
This site also has links (near the top of the initial page) to "free" statistical software and on-line books/methodology summaries. I hope to explore much of this content over the next few months.
