Taming the Big Data: Business Intelligence & Statistical Analysis

Abstract: With the advent of incentivized performance-based Medicare payments, the demand for building operational infrastructure to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of quality of care continues to grow. The Office of Performance Improvement of MD Anderson Cancer Center has been developing a business intelligence platform to help meet the regulatory requirements and to help measure the variability in the quality of care with comparative hospitals across the nation and hospitals within the MD Anderson Cancer Network. Our present challenge is how to best use the “big data” compiled from disparate data sources, which has complexities in terms of sheer volume and incongruities in technical structure. We will need to structure the “big data” into meaningful information that meets the regulatory requirements as well as deliver the actionable information that will drive the process improvements.

In this session, we will explore how federal and other healthcare agencies have begun the process of mandating the use of healthcare data, through various policies and initiatives, to report the quality of care, specifically in the area of cancer care. We will also exam how the Office of Performance Improvement incorporates the use of statistics to promote the transparency of the quality of care within an institution.
