  • Call For Nominations: 2013 Statistics In Chemistry Awards

The American Statistical Association’s Section on Physical & Engineering Sciences (SPES) is seeking nominations for the 2013 Statistics in Chemistry Award. Past award winners have addressed a wide range of topics, including calibration methods, recursive partitioning, forensics, and experimental design. Please note that statistics and chemistry are both broad topics. So, for example, collaborations between statisticians and biochemists are eligible for the award. If you know of an interesting collaboration between statisticians and chemists, please take the time to write a brief nomination letter — a paragraph or two about the work is sufficient — and send it to Phil Ramsey (PJRSTATS@aol.com) along with a copy of the nominees’ paper. The Award The Statistics in Chemistry Award was established in 1990 to recognize outstanding collaborative endeavors between statisticians and chemists. The award is sponsored by SPES and is presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings in August. Each recipient receives an engraved award and shares a cash prize. The current cash prize is $2,000. SPES solicits funding for the award from key industrial and manufacturing companies. Funding for the 2012 award was provided in part by GlaxoSmithKline. Qualifications The Statistics in Chemistry Award is based on the innovative use of statistics to solve a problem in chemistry, and the impact of the solution on the problem. In odd-numbered years, the award is presented for a paper published in refereed statistics, chemistry (including biochemistry and other fields of chemistry), or chemometrics journals during the previous two years. In even-numbered years the work does not need to have been published, but must be well documented. A statistician, to be eligible for the award, must be a member of American Statistical Association. Nomination Deadline And Award Presentation Nominations for the 2013 award are due by March 15, 2013. The award will be presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings in August. How To Submit A Nomination Nomination letters, along with an electronic copy of the publication(s) or other supporting material, should be sent to the Statistics in Chemistry Award Committee Chair, Phil Ramsey (phone: 603-672-5651, email: PJRSTATS@aol.com). You can find the above information, including a list of past winners of the Statistics In Chemistry Award, in the Word document at the following link.
