Hi all,
I wanted to let you know about an exciting new event at this year's JSM.
What: 110-minute meeting at JSM of stat lab personnel co-sponsored by the ASA Committee on Applied Statisticians (
CAS) and the Section on Statistical Consulting
When and Where: Wednesday, August 1 from 8:30-10:20AM in the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel F-Cheakamus Room (next to the Convention Center)
Why: The ASA Committee on Applied Statisticians created a Collaboration Initiative that started in 2017. The first part was a series of 10 webinars on specific collaboration and professional skills. The second part of the initiative is to develop a core curriculum for teaching statistical collaboration both at the university and on the job. The
final CAS webinar on July 10, 2018 brought together relevant, teachable aspects of statistical collaboration and created the ASCCR framework for teaching these skills. This JSM workshop will introduce this framework and get feedback from a critical cohort of statisticians, namely, those who run academic statistical consulting and collaboration centers ("stat labs") because these people are often the ones who teach "statistical consulting" to the students in their department. The second phase of the CAS Collaboration Initiative is to "train the trainers" to teach statistical collaboration skills, and this workshop begins this effort.
Who: All directors of stat labs, other stat lab faculty/staff, or their representatives in addition to anyone who teaches statistical consulting or collaboration are invited. If you teach or desire to teach consulting or collaboration in industry or government, your perspective is welcome too!
Goals:
- To build a network and community of academic statistical consulting center directors and other personnel
- To introduce the Committee on Applied Statisticians' "Train the Trainer" program, which is part of their ongoing Collaboration Initiative
- To disseminate and receive feedback on ideas for how to teach statistical collaboration
- To generate new ideas and best practices for teaching statistical consulting and collaboration and running stat labs
Agenda:
8:30AM - 8:35: Welcome and review of agenda [Eric Vance, chair of workshop]
8:35-8:45: Introduction to the ASCCR framework for statistical collaboration (Attitude-Structure-Content-Communication-Relationship) [Eric Vance]
