    Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) – Portland State University (PSU) School of Public Health (SPH) seeks candidates with strong training in statistics/biostatistics, or related areas, as well as excellent teaching and collaborative skills. This 12-month position will be at assistant or associate professor level at OHSU.

     

    Our SPH is a joint school combining the resources of two of Oregon's leading universities. We will lead in advancing a healthy, equitable society through community engagement, education, research, scholarship, and service. Uniting the cultures and resources of OHSU and of PSU, the SPH educates future public health leaders and advances public health scholarship through creative research, innovative educational practices, and sustained engagement with community partners. The SPH offers Bachelor, Master of Public Health, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in several public health disciplines, including an MPH and MS in Biostatistics. The incoming faculty will be part of the dynamic Biostatistics group within SPH.

    Position Responsibilities

    This full-time (1.0 FTE) position offers a flexible mix of teaching (0.36-0.72 FTE), individual research (0.1-0.5 FTE), and if desired, team science (0.1-0.3 FTE), to match individual faculty and SPH goals.  All teaching will be at the graduate level.  All faculty are encouraged to establish their own individual research agenda and to pursue independent funding for a portion of their support. Team science can occur directly with other SPH or OHSU investigators, or through biostatistics collaborative service cores.

    In addition to teaching and research, each SPH faculty member is expected to advise and mentor students, contribute to school governance, and engage in collegial activities in support of SPH and OHSU missions.

    Qualifications

    Minimum qualifications for the assistant professor position are a doctoral degree (Ph.D, Dr.PH, D.Sc.) in Biostatistics, Statistics or highly related specialty by the position start date, demonstrated potential in conducting collaborative and independent research, commitment to teaching graduate Biostatistics courses, and effective communication skills with a wide variety of audience. Candidate should also have a demonstrated commitment educational equity and promotion of diversity.  Candidates with experiences in collaborative and independent research, teaching graduate level courses in biostatistics or related topic areas, curriculum development and assessment as well as mentoring and/or advising graduate students are preferred.

    Qualifications for the associate professor position include:

    1. A doctorate degree (e.g., PhD, ScD, DrPH, DPhil) in biostatistics, statistics or a closely related discipline.
    2. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a diverse research program with a mixture of collaborative and independent methodological research and communicate products of scholarship including peer-reviewed publications.
    3. Experience in collaborative research/team science and demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding to support their research program.
    4. Experience in teaching graduate level Biostatistics courses and advising and/or mentoring graduate students, or other type of trainees. Teaching experiences in a variety of settings, including in-person, remote, and asynchronous are preferred.
    5. Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences.
    6. Commitment to educational equity and promotion of diversity.

    Candidates will be evaluated based on their experience, research productivity, publication record in peer-reviewed journals, and evidence of effective teaching and/or curriculum development. Expertise in any area of statistics or biostatistics is of interest; candidates with expertise or experience with one or more of the following are of particular interest:  data science and its application for public health and health disparities, clinical trials, statistical methods and designs for community intervention trials and geospatial modeling (e.g. applied to rural or environmental health).
