Presentation Title: CHANGING THE WORLD WITH STATISTICS
ABSTRACT:
Upon graduation from high school in the early 70's, I set out to "change the world". I had no idea that a career in statistics existed until later in that decade. Since that time, my career as a statistician has involved 20 years in the consumer produce/ health care industry at The Procter & Gamble Company and 13 years at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in academic research. I've had the privilege to work with brilliant researchers across the United States (and beyond) during my career and have "played in many sandboxes". I've had the challenges of growing and leading organizations in both industry and academia. I will provide an overview of the breadth of research I've been involved with in the health care arena and discuss the importance of being an effective leader and influencer in helping to ensure that decisions are based on high quality data and state-of-the-art statistical approaches. It is fitting that I will complete my career as a statistician at Cincinnati Children's which is "Changing the outcome together".
BIO:
Dr. Eileen King is a Research Professor in the Division of Biostatics and Epidemiology at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She is involved in multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary clinical research studies and provides biostatistical leadership in the design, analysis, interpretation and reporting of research results. Her areas of research include statistics, data management and data coordination for clinical research networks. Prior to joining Cincinnati Children's, she worked in the pharmaceutical industry and was involved in the drug development process. The Data Management and Coordinating Centers (DMCC) strengthen the ability of research networks to understand the complex pathways characterizing the etiology, diagnosis and management of diseases and the network's ability to assess clinical trial readiness. Their lab is the data coordinating center for the Rare Disease Clinical Research Network and the coordinating center for the Bench to Bassinet program. She is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and has served on the board of directors for the ASA. She has been a statistician for more than 30 years and began working at Cincinnati Children's in 2009. She received her PhD in 1988 under the advisement of Jeff Hart and Tom Wehrly. She was also the recipient of the H.O. Hartley Award in 2011.
