Understanding the BLS Inflation Statistics

Abstract: Inflation can be defined as the overall general upward price movement of goods and services in an economy. Inflation-related data is one of the few releases that directly applies to the daily cost of living, unlike many other economic indicators. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has various indexes that measure different aspects of inflation which are the consumer price index, producer price index, and the import and export prices indexes.
At this event, we will discuss the various BLS inflation statistics by highlighting aggregate price trends. We will explore a few industries/product areas by reviewing their price trends. Finally, we will discuss some improvements that the BLS is working on.
About the speaker: Jeffrey Hill became the Associate Commissioner for the Office of Prices and Living Conditions in 2020. Mr. Hill leads the strategic direction of production, development, and research for six divisions focused on prices and spending in the United States. These include three principal federal economic indicators-the Consumer Price Index, Producer Price Index, and Import and Export Price Indexes-along with the Consumer Expenditure Surveys, Price Index Research, and Price Statistical Methods. Mr. Hill holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and English Literature from Boston University and a Master of Science degree in Information Technology Management from Johns Hopkins University.
