  • 1.  Shipping texts to Africa - contact information (again) please

    Posted 01-13-2017 10:48
Awhile back one of our members posted a call for books that were being cleaned out to be re-purposed to build a math/stats resource centre in Africa (I think).  I have lost the contact information and am now in the midst of a purge at home and at work and have put the texts aside.  There is also a local stats group where the members have shown interest.  Can someone please provide the contact information?  Also, is there a catalogue of the contents to date, or maybe 20 copies of the same text don't matter at this time because they could be put out on permanent loan.

    Thanks so much.

    Janet

Ron LaPorte was looking for them for the Library of Alexandria.  But the last notice I saw seemed to imply that he my have received enough.  Regardless, he would probably be a good person to find another place to donate to.

Thanks Bob.  Lara responded and provided contact information for Ron.  He and Fritz are now trying to organize and fund a shipment of 10,000 volumes of statistics and research methods to the Library in Alexandria.  It is so very worthy to donate and help the emerging scientists contribute to our collective knowledge base.

    Bob,
thanks for posting the note.  We are discussing the possibility of another shipment of books to the Library of Alexandria, as the need is there, and we have been approached by several others who want to contribute now, but missed the first call. We have 6711 books at the library now, and a large virtual resource for all to use for free.

We are asking leading statistical people to look at their books on their shelf to see if there are any books that have not been opened in the past 5 years, and think that perhaps it would be better for budding young students to learn from them in Africa and Arab countries.

We have also been discussing having selected books scanned at the library of alexandria as the virtual research is greater than the book reach.  If you have recommendations, for selected books to go "virtual", let me know.  I of course want to be very careful due to copyright issues, but it is a nice dream to have selected books in the Serageldin Euclid library both virtual and paper. Come join Euclid and us for the next 400 years in the permanent collection.  Please invite your friends as well!!
