ASA Partners with New York Times Learning Network to Launch Monthly Statistics Feature

The American Statistical Association (ASA) has partnered with the New York Times Learning Network to help students better understand and think more critically about graphs: What's Going on in this Graph? (WGOITG): https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/06/learning/announcing-a-new-monthly-feature-whats-going-on-in-this-graph.html. A variation of their popular What's Going on in this Picture, WGOITG will be a monthly feature starting September 19 and continuing the second Tuesday of the following months (October 10, November 14) through the end of the school year in May.

Led by Sharon Hessney, the ASA team includes Corey Andreasen, Anna Bargagliotti, Chris Franklin, Stephen Miller, and Roxy Peck. A graph from a NYT news article will be presented on those dates with live moderation from 9 am-2 pm around the following questions:

      *   What do you notice?
      *   What do you wonder?
      *   What's going on in this graph?

On the Friday following the activity, the NYT LN will publish a follow up with details about the graph and statistical observations/lessons from Sharon and the team.

Please help us get the word out by sharing the announcement and the WGOITG dates with your networks (and on social media!) We also hope you'll involve students with this activity and send your comments to educinfo@amstat.org!

    Thank you,
    Rebecca

    Hi,

When I first saw this I was really excited. However, I see that these materials are behind the pay-wall and appear to the copyrighted, limiting how I might be able to use them for teaching. Is there another way for students to access these materials?

    Regards.

    Dear All,

Everything student-facing on the NYT Learning Network is free, as is everything they link to elsewhere on the NYT website (https://twitter.com/NYTimesLearning/status/906117699037745152).

The first WGOITG is Tuesday, September 18. Please help us to get the word out by sharing with your networks!

    Hi All,
I got the right day but wrong date. The first What's Going on in this Graph? (WGOITG) is Tuesday, 9/19! (Tomorrow for those of you reading this in the digest.)
Thanks to the many of you helping to spread the word. We're excited for this opportunity to have statistics and our members in such a spotlight helping students.
Sorry for writing the wrong date.
    Best,
    Steve

Great initiative. I've brought it up on Tuesday at a talk I did at a meetup on data visualization and provided the link to the people in attendance.

Thanks to Francois and many others of you for sharing this new activity. For those of you curious about what the Friday "reveal" looks likes, it's now posted at the bottom of the 9/19 WGOITG. The reveal includes "a link to the original graph and the article that accompanied it" and "related statistical nuggets that might help [students] more fully make sense of the graph."

I should have pointed out this partnership happened because of outreach from the firm executing our PR Campaign, This is Statistics, Stanton Communications. They reached out to the NYT Learning Network last fall around the election prediction contest, which resulted in the 10/5/16 NYT LN lesson plan, And the Winner Is …? Using Statistics to Predict the 2016 Presidential Election and led to further interactions.

Thank you for your support which makes activities like This is Statistics possible!

    Best,
    Steve

    Dear All,

The second What's Going on in This Graph? (WGOITG) is tomorrow, Tuesday, October 10. The first WGOITG attracted an impressive 547 comments and we're hoping to keep building on that throughout the academic year.

    Please help spread the word!

    Thank you!

In this week's graph the axis labels do not say how nutritious each group thinks the food is.  Instead, they say what proportion of nutritionists and what proportion of the public thinks each foods is nutritious.  Those are entirely different issues.  What were the surveys really trying to measure?

    Stephen,

The materials will be free and accessible without a subscription.  I was able to access the current Math and Science lessons at https://www.nytimes.com/spotlight/learning-science-math.  I noticed some pop-ups advertising subscriptions to the NY Times, but I just closed them and was able to access the material.  One can even make comments without a subscription by signing in via Google or Facebook.

If you have trouble accessing the content, please take a screenshot and let us know.  We will be happy to look into any issues that arise as these are intended to be freely accessible.

We hope you do use these materials for teaching and would like to hear how it goes.  Please feel free to provide feedback to educinfo@amstat.org.

    Thanks,

    Rebecca

    Dear All,

We had a really successful launch today of the New York Times Learning Network activity, What's Going On in This Graph (WGOITG), thanks to the ASA moderators, Sharon Hessney and Corey Andreasen: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/19/learning/whats-going-on-in-this-graph-sept-19-2017.html. Last I checked more than 100 comments were shared/exchanged by students and the moderators (mostly the former!) The next step will be Friday when a link to the original graph and the article that accompanied it will be posted and they'll provide related statistical nuggets that might help students more fully make sense of the graph.

The WGOITG activity continues the 2nd Tuesday of the month for the remainder of the academic year: October 10, November 14, ...

Please continue to help spread the word about this new activity. This is a great opportunity to make students more aware of statistics.

    Thank you,
    Steve
