    ASA Section on Risk Analysis

    2015 Student Paper Competition
    and Best Poster Competition

The Section on Risk Analysis of the American Statistical Association is soliciting entries for a student paper competition for the 2015 Joint Statistical Meetings. Each year the section offers at least one student a travel award to defray costs for attendance and presentation of their work at the Joint Statistical Meetings. The travel awards are $1000 for the best paper and $750 for the second best paper. This competition is open to all graduate and undergraduate students, full or part-time, attending an accredited academic program. The student must be a member of the Section on Risk Analysis or should join the section at the time of the paper submission. The work may be the development of new methodology in risk analysis or the application of existing risk methods in a novel way. The contribution may be a theoretical development or it may cover any of the numerous applications of risk analysis, including environmental risk, financial risk, risk to engineering structures, health risks, risks to defense and national security, etc. Papers that have been accepted for publication are not eligible for the competition. Winners of the award must present their work in a JSM session sponsored primarily by the Risk Analysis Section.

    Entrants should submit the following:

    1. A list of authors and contact information (the student must be the first author).
    2. A double-spaced manuscript in two versions: a regular manuscript with author information and a blinded manuscript without author information or other identifying information (such as references). Both versions should include an abstract. There are no requirements concerning the minimum or maximum length of the manuscript, but conciseness is encouraged.
    3. A reference letter from a faculty member familiar with the submitted work, stating the student status of the applicant and the publication status of the manuscript.

Entries should be sent to Aleka Kapatou, Chair of the Student Paper Award Committee, via email at kapatou@american.edu. The email should include the two versions of the completed manuscript as attachments in PDF format (Word format will also be accepted, but PDF is preferred). All entries must arrive by midnight on December 15, 2014. Please include the words "Student Paper Award" in the subject line of the email. Manuscripts will be judged based on relevance and interest of the subject matter, the quality of writing, and of course the quality of the research itself. The result will be announced by January 15 and the winner(s) will be required to submit their abstract to JSM by midnight, February 2, 2015.

Students who are not selected for a Student Paper Award may participate in the Best Poster Competition by submitting a poster at the JSM for the Section on Risk Analysis. The award for the Best Poster Competition is $500. The best poster is selected at the JSM.
