Dr. Esther Drill (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center)

The ASA Biometrics Strategic Initiatives Committee is proud to announce its funding support for a project led by Dr. Esther Drill, Principal Biostatistician at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  Her project, titled “Developing the Next Generation of Biostatisticians”, in alignment with the "Bridge to Biostats" program, proposes a "Biostat days" that will introduce underserved and underrepresented high school students in New York City to the field of Biostatistics. This will include a suite of interactive "statistical thinking" exercises that will be used in Biostats day and in Dr. Drill's enrichment classes that will be shared with educators online. The exercises will be supported by R ShinyApps that include discussion of Population vs Sample Mean, the F-test, and Guessing ages, and the apps will be designed to summarize/visualize in real time. Dr. Drill plan to reach as many students as possible and to host 4 events per year.

We are excited about Dr. Drill’s project and look forward to seeing its impact on biostatistics outreach! The ASA Biometrics Strategic Initiatives Committee was led by Dr. Tanya P. Garcia (Chair, Texas A&M University) and Dr. Milan Bimali (Co-Chair, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences).
