One of the truly great activities in SPES is the nomination, evaluation and selection for our Statistics in Chemistry Award. Thanks to our Chemometrics Chair, Rick Lewis, we had a great selection of papers to choose from for this year’s award. The 2011 Statistics in Chemistry Award is presented to Thomas Brendan Murphy, Nema Dean, and Adrian E. Raftery for their paper “Variable Selection and Updating In Model-Based Discriminant Analysis for High Dimensional Data with Food Authenticity Applications” published in Annals of Applied Statistics, 4(1):396-421. The Statistics in Chemistry Award was established in 1990 to recognize outstanding collaborative endeavors between statisticians and chemists. This year’s winning paper identified a real-world problem in food chemistry, and developed a statistical methodology that provides a practical solution.
The award will be presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings where the recipients will receive a plaque and share a cash prize generously funded for this year’s award by DuPont.
Please see the following ASA’s website for additional information about the award, including a list of past winners. In addition, to learn more about the award and how to be a sponsor for the award, please contact our Chemometrics Chair, Rick Lewis (richard.a.lewis@gsk.com).
