Title
Analyzing Geo-location Big Data to Provide Personalized Offers

Doug Freud Biography

Doug has 25 years of experience implementing, selling, and marketing Advanced Analytics. With a traditional background in statistics, Doug joined SPSS after graduate school and discovered an appetite for data and text mining. Doug joined the SPSS Professional Services organization and realized that he liked not only the underlying analytics, but the challenges associated with changing business processes and working within the IT infrastructure. After leaving SPSS, Doug joined Oracle and led a professional services team that focused on integrating Data Mining into their BI and Marketing offerings.  Currently Doug is Technical Director at KXEN, An SAP Company, where he works with existing customers helping them build and operationalize predictive models.

Abstract:  Advanced Analytics in the Age of Big Data: Challenges & Opportunities

While using Advanced Analytics to solve business problems is not new, the onslaught of big data will change everything from the problems we are trying to solve to the algorithms we use. The challenges of managing big data are substantive and still in their infancy, and as this infrastructure matures the analytical techniques and processes will also need to evolve and scale. One new opportunity will revolve around personalization based on geo-location (location based analytics), and how organizations can use the mobile channel to provide real-time offers.

Registration is NOT required, but we appreciate an RSVP here.

Abstract:

Big data solutions are primarily used for storage and querying. While return on investment can be obtained based on these two functionalities, the window of opportunity substantially expands if various analytics-based approaches can be performed directly on big data platforms. There are important differences between traditional approaches and mostly yet-to-be-developed robust solutions for big data analytics. The current state of big data analytics will be summarized, the important differences discussed, and the challenges ahead shared.

Speaker biography:

Diego Klabjan's research is focused on applying analytics in the areas of sustainability, airline management, railway industry, logistics, operations management and supply chain optimization, production planning, integer programming, and parallel computing. Among other companies, he has collaborated with United Airlines, American Airlines, Sabre Holdings, FedEx Express, General Motors, and NASA. Klabjan is a professor at the Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences. Statistician of the Year Recap

The Chicago Chapter of the American Statistical Association presented their "Statistician of the Year"Award for 2013-2014 to Dr. Larry V. Hedges, on Oct. 24, 2013, at the East bank Club in Chicago.

Dr Hedges, a Board of Trustees Professors at Northwestern University, was editor of the Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness, the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, was Quantitative Methods Editor of Psychological Bulletin, and Associate Editor of the American Journal of Sociology.  He has authored or co-authored numerous journal articles and eight books, including Statistical Methods for Meta-Analysis (with I. Olkin, Elsevier, 1985) and The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis (with H. Cooper and J. Valentine, Russell Sage, 2009).

This award is presented to an individual with significant contributions in the field of statistics. He is the 41st recipient of this prestigious award. Some notable past winners include John Tukey (1966), William Cochran (1973), Bradley Efron (1980), Donald Rubin (2000),  David Wallace (2008) and Jay Kadane (2013). Nominees are selected by a special committee chaired by the past president of the Chapter, and voted on by past awardees.

The event was celebrated at the East Bank Club with more than forty individuals including Dr. Hedge's wife, daughter, and several guests. Dr Hedges presented a talk entitled: "Big Data with Big Consequences, but Who Will Benefit?"  A good time was had by all.

Ever Been to an Unconference?

What exactly is an unconference? Using a web conferencing tool (such as Google Plus in this case) the three biostatistics professors behind the Simply Statisics blog  put together the Unconference on the Future of Statistics: a series of ten-minute speakers sharing their thoughts on what is happening within the statistics community and their predictions and hopes on where things could be headed.

From Hilary Mason delving into the definition of the ubiquitous term "data scientist" to Joe Blitzstein -creator of the Stat 110 course on iTunes - talking about how education needs more live, messy data, there is truly something for everyone who is excited about the future of statistics. For those who live and breathe statistics, the question will no longer be "what is an unconference" but undoubtedly "when is the next one?"
