The President’s 2012 budget request to Congress was released yesterday. However, with the 2011 budget still being debated, it is difficult to put the numbers into context. The comparisons below are to the current Continuing Resolution (CR) and to the 2011 request, but the current bill in the House of Representatives would further decrease both the NSF and NIH budgets.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is requesting $7.767 billion. This is a 13.0% increase over the level of the CR, but only a 4.6% increase over the President’s 2011 budget request. The Research & Related Activities (which pays for research grants) is $6.25 billion. This is a 12.4% increase over the current CR and a 3.9% increase over the 2011 request.

Within the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) at NSF, the 2012 request is $260 million, a 7.9% increase over the CR and a 2.7% increase over the 2011 request. The Research & Related Activities request for DMS is $241 million, a 12.4% increase over the CR and a 7.9% increase over the 2011 request.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is requesting $31.8 billion. This is a 3.4% increase over the CR, but a slight decrease from the 2011 request.
