List of Statisticians Becoming Senior University Administrators Growing

[The list in this blog entry is being updated as we learn of more people but the lead text has not been edited since March, 2016. I am not keeping each entry updated so many people may have rotated out of the positions listed below.] 

The statistical community is celebrating this week the news of Sally C Morton being named as dean for Virginia Tech College of Science. Morton will join a growing list of statisticians who are or have been in senior university administration positions, signifying the growing recognition of the importance of statistics to improving science:

Going further back, I've been informed of the following: William Kruskal, was Dean of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago; W. Allen Wallis was Dean of the Graduate School of Business (1956-62) at the University of Chicago and President (1962-1970) and Chancellor (1970-1982) of the University of Rochester; Gerald Lieberman was Vice Provost and Dean of Research at Stanford, and later was Provost (1992-1994); Al Bowker was Chancellor of the City University of New York, then Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, and then Dean of the School of Public Affairs at Maryland; and Lowell Jacob Reed was the seventh president of Johns Hopkins University.
