Undergraduate Data Science/Analytics Program Q&A's

By Steve Pierson posted 07-01-2015 13:16

The July and August Amstat News issues feature Q&A's with eight undergraduate data science/analytics programs, starting with these five programs in the July issue in this piece, New Undergraduate Data Science Programs:

  1. Northern Kentucky University BS in Data Science
  2. University of California, Irvine BS in Data Science
  3. University of Nottingham BSc in Data Science
  4. University of Warwick BSc in Data Science
  5. Winona State University Data Science Program

The August issue features:

  1. Miami University Analytics Co-Major
  2. Ohio State University Data Analytics Major
  3. University of Michigan Major in Data Science

For each Q&A, we asked for joint responses from representatives of each department collaborating in the program (typically a statistics department and a computer science department) to the following questions:

  1. How do you view the relationship between statistics and data science?
  2. What are the basic elements of your data science curriculum, and how was it developed?
  3. What was your primary motivation(s) for developing an undergraduate data science program? What’s been the reaction from students so far?
  4. Describe the reception you received from the partnering departments, other departments, and those at the university who had to approve the program.
  5. What advice do you have for students considering a data science degree versus a computer science degree, statistics degree, another degree, or some combination of the above (e.g., a double major of statistics and computer science)?

Please check out both sets of Q&A's to learn more about these programs, the emergence of the undergraduate data science programs, how these programs view the connection of statistics to data science, advice for potential students, and much more. I hope you'll also leave your comments on the emergence of undergraduate data science/analytics programs in the comment space.
