That's an interesting article, David. I'd suggest that the anecdote that you provide gives useful insight to the challenges that R presents: the output was confusing but because you had access to the objects, you were able to dissect them and figure out what you needed to do.
The rationale for the prepended 0 made me smile; lpsolve is a wrapper for accessing external code and we've all built quick and dirty bridges!
