Welcome to Biopharmaceutical Section's blog

Welcome to the inaugural posting on the new BIOP (Biopharmaceutical Section) blog.  Many thanks are due to BIOP Chair-Elect Alex Dmitrienko and Lara Harmon (ASA’s Marketing and Online Community Coordinator) for not only the idea of our Section having its own blog but also for setting up this curated blog. All members are encouraged to read these postings as an avenue to professional interactions, widespread communication, and increasing the relevance of BIOP among our colleagues and friends.

Since the beginning of 2016, officers and members have been at work planning for 2 big meetings this year:  JSM (Joint Statistical Meetings) at Chicago’s McCormick Place, 30 Jul – 04 Aug, and the ASA BIOP Regulatory-Industry Statistics Workshop to be held in Washington, DC, 28-30 Sep.  Mark your calendars now and plan to attend one or both of these important meetings.

A BIOP Executive Committee Meeting was held on Mar 7, 2016, during the ENAR meeting in Austin, TX.  Official minutes will be distributed to the Section but until then, here are a few highlights of the meeting.

At this year’s JSM BIOP will be sponsoring (as primary sponsor) 4 invited sessions, 21 topic-contributed sessions, 21 contributed paper sessions, 13 round-table coffees and luncheons, 2 short courses plus posters and a student paper session. Thanks go to this year’s BIOP Program Chair Olga Marchenko, Program Chair-Elect Jennifer Gauvin, as well as Erik Pulkstenis and Ted Lystig for much heavy lifting to select and schedule the many sessions, papers, and other activities.   Also 24 student paper submissions were reviewed and winners will be announced Tues evening during the open BIOP business meeting at JSM.  Please plan to attend.  BIOP will again sponsor Best Contributed Paper and also Contributed Poster Awards.

Thanks go to Edmund Luo and Freda Cooner, who are Chairs for this year’s 25th Anniversary Workshop, for which substantial planning efforts have already occurred.  More details will be provided in an upcoming blog post.

This year the Executive Committee (EC) intends to emphasize the importance of establishing Scientific Working Groups on topics of interest and importance to biostatisticians.  The existing Working Group for Safety Analysis led by Qi Jiang and Olga Marchenko has made progress on this topic and the EC is actively soliciting other topics for working groups and those interested in serving on the working groups.  If you have any suggestions for topics or if you are interested in participating in this activity, please contact me or another EC member.

We are also aware that the process for tracking and utilizing those who volunteer to get more involved with BIOP could be more effective than it currently is.  It is important to the membership and the health of the Section that everyone who wishes to serve is given an opportunity to contribute.  If you have volunteered in the past and not been contacted about serving, again, please contact me or another EC member.  We want everyone with a desire and with possibly great ideas for the Section to have the opportunity to contribute.

Also again this year BIOP will be visibly supporting ASA’s Docent program for new JSM attendees.  Look for more details when you register to attend JSM.

More details of the EC meeting will be contained in the general minutes to be distributed later.  Stay tuned for more BIOP news.
