Welcome Message

Bula!!  We look forward to welcoming you to the sunny shores of Fiji for the First International Conference for Health Statistics in the Pacific Islands. For many people outside the Pacific Islands, the mention of Fiji brings many visions to mind ... cocktails by the pool, idyllic beaches, and glorious sunsets. These visions are all a strong component of Fiji's identity, and we definitely recommend delegates make a side-trip to our tourist capital in Nadi. Suva is the business capital of Fiji, and as such is the center of the "real" Fiji, the Fiji behind the glossy tourist photos. Fiji is composed of almost a million inhabitants primarily living on the island of Viti Levu. The Pacific Islands are full of peaceful, fun-loving people who are working hard to tackle the health problems that are being faced within these developing nations.

The International Conference for Health Statistics in the Pacific Islands was established in order to provide much-needed training in the field of statistics to health workers in the Pacific Islands. This conference brings together statistical experts from around the world (including the US, Australia, and New Zealand), local statisticians from the Pacific Islands, and local health workers who are seeking to advance their knowledge of statistics to support their work in other health disciplines. It is envisaged that approximately half of the conference sessions will focus on statistical training (provided by local and international experts) and that half of the conference will focus on research seminars. In these seminars researchers will discuss health projects that they are currently involved in and the role of statistics within these projects.

Come and enjoy the peaceful lifestyle of the Pacific Islands, of Suva the "real" Fiji, and meet with health researchers and statisticians from the local and international communities.
